Straits Times report: Star Wars collectible postcards

Promotional postcards for Star Wars Ep II, Attack of the Clones. This is an article published in The Straits Times dated 3 April 2002. TCF organised the release of nine postcards with one new design introduced on a weekly basis to 'get people excited about the movie, and to introduce the good and bad guys to the public'. Supposedly 20,000 postcards of each character could be picked up at cinema lobbies nationwide. Being a Star Wars fan, these beautiful memorabilia could not be missed. I set out to collect the series of 9 postcards but the 1st featuring Anakin Skywlker proved elusive and could nowhere be found. Initially I couldn't understand why, but set off determined to get the remaining postcards . I reasoned the collectors who were fortunate to get the 1st postcard would set about collecting the remaining 8 cards with the same amount of fervour. I smelled a rat when that didn't prove to be the case at all! The remaining 8 postcards could be found in reasonably large quantities at the cinema lobbies for weeks after they were available for the taking. It didn't make sense for true-blue Star Wars fans to collect only the 1st postcard and forget the rest. I got my answer soon enough surfing for clues on Yahoo Auctions. I discovered there were ready sellers for the Anakin Skywalker cards at the Princely sum of $10!!! And these sellers apparently had loads of the 1st postcard to sell!!! I have never seen more selfish and unscrupulous people who turned this into $$$ making opportunity! Made me really fed up, anyway to date I don't have the 1st one and still feeling sore about it.
I will scan the postcards I own and post on the blog soon.

Aluminium Card Holder for Men in Black II Movie

Classy aluminium name card holder promoting the movie Men in Black 2, this is one equip the FBI wannabe can't leave home without. This sequel to Men in Black was just as good as the 1st movie in my opinion. Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones have great chemistry onscreen and that made the movie appealing and enjoyable for me. I am looking forward to see these 2 megastars collaborating in the near future.

Stunning Cigarette Lighter for Fantastic 4: Rise of Silver Surfer Movie

The stunning design of the lighter and the lovely aluminium box housing it makes this item a most desired item for collectors. To view my Fantasic Four disk holder, please click here

Maid in Manhattan Keychain

Can you tell what this item is? It is actually a very shiny and classy keychain. It is housed in a box designed to look like jewellery and practically sparkles when it catches the light! Something you might give your better half to keep her feeling loved. How appropriate in keeping with the romantic theme of the movie. This 2002 movie is recommended for couples. Love knows no boundaries.....

Australia Movie Pen and Velvet pouch

A very nice pen with velvet pouch promoting the Baz Luhrmann movie Australia. This item was actually produced by RDP Creative in the UK for TCF. The quality really shows! I have watched the movie and liked it. I will admit that initially I felt like giving this movie a miss as I had some preceived notions it would be very boring. I mean the title is 'Australia' which does not sound very exciting at all. It's starring Hugh Jackman but it does not exactly shout 'X-Men. I'm glad I gave it a chance becoz this movie is really ok. If you have not watched it yet, go rent the title, you won't be disappointed.
If you liked this item, you migh also be interested to view my Australia Movie Notebook

Daimaru invite to Spirited Away movie 2001

This is an invite to the delightful Japanese animation movie Spirited Away organized by the Daimaru Department Store in Dec 2001. I was lucky to be offered the invite by a nice Japanese lady who couldn't attend the screening. Notice the Japanese translation for the screening details on the right of the ticket? Thats becoz the event was organized for their customers, the majority Japanese. The film was screened in a small cinema hall with capacity for 150 people and practically all who turned up for the screening were Japanese parents with kids in tow! The movie was simply entertaining and remains one of my favourite animation films.
On a sideline, the Japanese retailer no longer has any presence in Singapore as they closed all their 3 stores in 2003.

Shaw Balestier Cineplex launch

This is an invite to Shaw Organisation's launch of their new Balestier Cineplex for the Premiere of a movie called Asterix & Obelix. The foreign movie was forgettable with horrible English dubbing.

Batman and Robin Movie postcards

A set of 5 promotional glossy movie postcards from the Batman & Robin movie in 1997. Dont know why there were so many discussions and on the supposedly gay relationship between Batman/Robin? Arnie's the one they should be paying attention to! His performance as Mr Freeze is outstanding. To date I still remember this quote from Mr Freeze: You're not sending me to the cooler! I want so much to it ask Arnie this question: Why do you want to be a boring politician??? Quit fooling around and come back to acting! MILLIONS OF FANS LOVE U AND ARE WAITING FOR YOUR RETURN!
ok
got it out of my system

Notebook - Memoirs of a Geisha Movie

I like this notebook promoting the movie Memoirs of a Geisha. It looks very Japanese and every time I am reminded of the movie, Zhang Ziyi in her geisha role and her funny English accent. The odd shape of the notebook (cheque book size) makes it inconvenient for casual use and is more suitable for collecting LOL!

Gala Premiere of Vanilla Sky

2001- 18th December
Crowds, barricades and thousands of screaming fans.
Location: Outside the Shaw Centre, in the heart of Orchard Road.
Event: The Gala Premiere of Vanilla Sky at Lido cinema attended by no less than Internaional filmstar Tom Cruise, his main squeeze at that time Penelope Cruz and Director Cameron Crowe.
Hours before the red carpet arrival of the megastar, hundreds of fans were already at the venue, with cameras, movie posters and notebooks in tow, jostling and shoving their way to the front of the barricades. It was a very warm day,but nobody seemed to mind as the sweaty crowd waited in frenzied anticipation. Their singular purpose, to catch a glimpse of Tom Cruise in the flesh, a prized photo opportunity and hoping against hope to bag a rare autograph by the film star himself.
When Tom Cruise finally arrived hand in hand with Penelope Cruz, security personnel could hardly contain the excitable and screaming crowd from pushing, shoving and waving frantically to catch his attention. Tom was all smiles and happily rewarded his fans with handshakes and signing a number of autographs before he was pulled away by his minders.

Lovely House of Balloons

I saw a lovely house constructed entirely of balloons at the 5th level of Shaw Centre to promote the animation movie UP and couldn't resist taking a photo.
I have already watched the Up movie in 3D, though its good, I enjoyed the Ice Age 3 movie in 3D more.

Heat Sensitive Mug from Day After Tomorrow movie

Frankly speaking, when I first laid eyes on the box with the scenes from the movie, I really loved it. But when I opened the box and saw the mug felt so disappointed. The mug really looks very flimsy!!! I mean come on man, the packaging is fantastic and this is such a big budget movie! Why can't Twentieth Century Fox commission some nice promotional items? No budget???
Anyway when it is filled with hot water, the image on the mug is supposed to react to the heat and show some other image. What image? I didn't bother to find out.

Blade- Vampire Hunter Swiss Army Knife

A nice collectible Swiss Army Knife from the movie Blade. IMO this 1st Blade movie from 1998 is the BEST. All the sequels just dont't measure up. I got this item from 8 Days magazine by taking part in their call-in contest. I still have the contest questions.
Try answering them?
1. How many members form the Nation of Vampires?
2. Who plays the character of Underlord of the Nation of Vampires?
3. Name the character played by Wesley Snipes in this movie.
4. Blade is half man, half what?
5. Name another movie which stars Wesley Snipes.
6. When does Blade open in Singapore?
7. What phrase comes after this sentence:
'The Power of an Immortal.
The Soul of a human'

The Picturehouse Page Magazine 1998

A very serious looking Chow Yun Fatt posing with Mira Sorvino on the cover of this 1998 1st issue of The Picturehouse Page. The Replacement Killers was the movie they were promoting at that time. Thats a movie I enjoyed very much. I have virtually watched all of Chow Yun Fatt's movies, save for that Dragonball Evolution crap.

Cathay: The Picturehouse Page 2nd issue?

My issue of : The Picturehouse Page is probably the 2nd issue of a shortlived publication of the Cathay Organisation. The issue is for May/June 1997 and there are movie / soundtracks reviews as well as contests to win movie collectibles.
P.S: If anyone has information on the 1st issue please drop me a note, thank you very much.

Watch from Rush Hour 2 Movie

One of the promotional items for the Rush Hour 2 movie starring Chris Rock and Jackie Chan. The sequel was released in 2001.

Leather Bookmark from The Patriot movie

A pair of leather bookmarks from the Melson Gibson movie: The Patriot which screened in 2000. The gold letterings printed on soft leather gives it a nostalgic feel just like something from a long forgotten past. I just can't bring myself to use these nice items as usual....

Star Wars Episode1 Special Covers - 8 Days Magazine

A set of 4 Special Edition covers released by 8 Days Magazine to promote the Star Wars Phantom Menace movie in 1999. My magazines are still in excellent condition.
