Spy Kids 2 Movie Notebook

This movie notebook is a large A4 size and promotional item for the Spy Kids2: Island of Lost Dreams. The notebook cover is a reflective silver that captures the light and shines brightly, perhaps to match the futuristic theme of the movie, what with all the new-fangled spy gadgets and toys.  In the hands of a spy(kid), I'm  sure this notebook wouldn't look out of place at all.
Anyhow, this notebook is way nicer than my Spy Kids2 Movie folder.

Fantastic Four Movie Notebook

Another promotional item for the Fantastic Four movie is this fantastic looking notebook featuring the characters from the movie. By the way this notebook was printed by Samsung as a movie tie-in and to create awareness and visibility for their brand. This clearly reflects the confidence of the Korean electronics giant in the undeniable appeal of the Fantastic Four to keep the cash registers in their stores ringing merrily.

You've Got Mail Movie Post-it-Pad

A post-it pad from the 1998 sweet romantic comedy You've Got Mail with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan as the male and female leads who are bitter business rivals who can't stand the sight of each other but are unknowingly attracted to each other corresponding annonymously through email on the internet.  Our two leads are very comfortable in their roles in this light-hearted comedy and if you've also watched the classic Sleepless in Seattle, you can't help drawing comparisons between the two movies. I think the main theme in these 2 movies is simply that love works in mysterious ways. Sometimes you may find it where you least expected it. I can't decide which movie is better because I like them both.  If you're a  movie fan of this genre, I'm sure you share my opinion too.

The Four Feathers Movie Notebook

I guess those guys and gals in the A&P Dept finally got sick and tired of the usual run-of-the-mill promotional movie notebooks. So during brainstorming, some bright spark suggested something different. Different but not too different. In the end they stuck with the notebook, only this time the notebook is made thicker to look like a book with a canvass cover to boot. They probably thought of it then as an elegant or even clever design for the movie set in 1884.
The truth is that the notebook doesn't look great at all. I'm wondering why not just save the trouble and give out FOUR FEATHERS instead, that would mean saving a bundle on the advertising costs and look a lot more presentable. Think about it, four feathers to promote The Four Feathers movie. I will gladly take those feathers but oh please make sure they're packed in a really nice box thank you.

UIP Singapore Media Release for The Truman Show

This is a media release from UIP (Singapore) for The Truman Show in 1998.  I couldn't agree more with UIP, this movie is indeed brilliant and "an unforgettable experience".  Jim Carrey puts up a most entertaining and critically acclaimed performance as the unwitting star of The Truman Show, a live reality TV show that centres around his life.  Life for Truman Burbank is literally one big show, everything around him is one big movie set. Friends, colleagues, neighbours and even his wife are just actors acting out the script. Situations are created on the show to milk ratings. What a terrible premise! While I laughed along easily at the jokes, I couldn't help but sympathise with the unfortunate Truman who has his life under scrutiny 24/7.
I left the cinema hall in a reflective mood, comtemplating questions for which I had no immediate answers.  Isn't life somewhat like a big stage and we are the actors?  Are we truly happy with what we  have?  Are we meant to be doing something else with our lives? Too many questions....

Spy Kids 2 Movie folder

I was just rummaging in my drawers and found this forgotten paper folder promoting the movie Spy Kids 2: Island of Lost Dreams.  For a movie about spies, nothing's special about this folder, no hidden spy gadgets, no secret compartments.  Believe me I really checked, its just a plain paper folder.  Yeah maybe thats why I can't remember much about this movie.  So there you have it, my very plain Spy Kids 2 folder.

Come to think about it, I'd rather prefer the Spy Kids 2 Movie Notebook.

The Saint Movie Collectible Pin

Before we had The Bourne Identity, we had The Saint.  This movie screened in 1997 with Val Kilmer as the lead. A master of disguise like Jason Bourne, the talented protagonist Simon Templar is also one of the world's most successful master thieves. On the last heist before his retirement from the world of crime, things start going wrong for the thief.  He falls in love with the scientist he is supposed to steal a secret formula from and also gets embroiled an assassination plot to overthrow the Russian Premier.  The action is intense and the tempo fast-paced.  I like this movie.  I also like the movie pin......

Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within Collectible Mousepad

Final Fantasy is one of the most successful media franchise developed and owned by Square Enix, a Japanese company.  It started out as a RPG (role-playing game) in 1987 on the NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) game console and is currently available on a wide range of platforms, still widely popular with fans of role-playing games.  Now there are also movies, printed media, toys and other merchandise.

The many successful sequels feature different storylines but contain recurring plot themes and characters.  I waited in anticipation for the screening of the Final Fantasy movie in 2001 and it was worth the wait.  The animation was beautifully rendered and the story simply engaging.  For fans of Japanese animation movies and Final Fantasy, this movie is a "must watch".

The lenticular mousepad shown here is one of my favorites and now I am thinking if Final Fantasy were to be remade into 3D for the big screen, that would be really great news.

The One Movie Collectible Keychain

A collectible keychain from the movie The One with Jet Li in the lead role.  In my opinion, this movie suffers from a weak script that is really uninspiring and preposterous.  We are supposed to believe that there are many parallel universes with many other versions of our own selves in existence. And suppose that one evil version of ourself starts traversing across parallel universes killing the other versions.  And why, you ask? Just so that with each version killed, it would make the surviving versions stronger.  Our evil version of Jet Li wants to be The One, the last surviver and strongest of them all.  Yeah right. But even a Shaolin trained Jet Li couldn't save this sad excuse of a movie. In the end, this movie is really just a vehicle for Jet Li to show off some moves and make some moolah.  Take my advice, give this movie a miss. If you still insist on watching, you must either be very very bored or an incorrigible die-hard Jet Li fan!

Planet Hollywood Singapore Collectible Pin

All that is left for me to remember the Planet Hollywood outlet in Singapore are the items I managed to purchase from the souvenir store before it closed down, like this collectible metal pin exclusive to Singapore.  I used to have a nice Planet Hollywood Singapore t-shirt but unfortunately it has already left for the recycling plant a few years ago.

Hero (Japanese) Movie Notebook. Who is Takuya Kimura?

Do you know who Takuya Kimura is?  Who's that?... I would have rewarded you with a blank look if you had thrown me that question.  And would you have given me the incredulous look that says 'Hello, you don't know Takuya (木村拓哉)? Have you been  staying on Earth all this while?'  Ok, I have to admit I don't know who the hell this guy is.

For someone who is not into Japanese pop culture, you have to pardon my ignorance. But while I would hardly be bothered if he was standing right next to me on the train, the huge turnout of ladies attending the movie preview of Hero on a fine weekday evening apparently did not of share my lack of enthusiasm.  From the moment the pretty-boy lead appeared on the big screen, the ladies were obviuosly besotted with Tasuya, ooh-ing and aah-ing loudly at his antics.  Bear in mind that these are not teenage girls I'm talking about, they were matured ladies in their mid 20s to early 30s decked out in office attire and really this was something that doesn't happen regularly in Singapore! About 15 minutes into the movie, it finally dawned on me that this was the same guy in the Gatsby ad with all the funny hairstyles.  Turning to my companion, my suspicions were confirmed and he was indeed the same person. And I also learned that Takuya is a Japanese celebrity, member of the immensely popular band SMAP with legions of fans around the world.  Hmm, ok so he actually sings as well.. What, so you want to know what the movie was all about?  I'm sorry, I was too engrossed with the numerous close-ups of Takuya on the big screen and paid scant attention to the storyline. Well, I've already shown you the notebook. If you really want to know, you'll just have to google it yourself.
